DER ZWERG in Corona Times
When the question first arose whether DER ZWERG could take place this year, my spontaneous reaction was quick and definitive: of course! We’ll find formats, technical solutions, new channels, new partners, and new helpers, to bring Lieder to our audience in 2020. We won’t cancel!
And that’s just what has happened. We’re thrilled that SWR and Deutschlandfunk have come on board, the Junge Bühne Sindelfingen offers great expertise in all things streaming, and the Kinderfilmakademie will film the concerts at the highest level. Our sponsors and many helpers continue to support us, and the city of Sindelfingen stands firmly behind us. The artists, too, are prepared to explore new ways to continue making music and reaching their audiences. I’m unbelievably thankful for them all!
Of course, safety is our top priority. This year’s concept enables our concerts to be experienced both physically in the space, and virtually over the internet. In accordance with necessary safety regulations, around 40 audience members per concert will have the opportunity to experience the events live at Odeon. On site, we will adhere to required distance and sanitation regulations. Viewers not physically present will be able to stream concerts at www.derzwergfestival.de.

Pianist Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula presents Schumann’s great Fantasie in C in Sindelfingen, inspired by Beethoven’s song cycle An die ferne Geliebte. He and Johannes Held also play Schumann’s Dichterliebe as well as lieder from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

Mahler’s “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” (Songs of a Wayfarer), songs from Brecht’s “Dreigroschenoper” (Three-penny Opera), and Schönberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” (Transfigured Night), arranged for piano trio: a program of contrast for the final evening of ZWERG 2020.

Welcome Address from Helmut Deutsch
In these confusing times, where culture has effectively come to a halt in so many places, Johannes Held has managed to continue fostering interesting and highly varied programs for the festival Der ZWERG. This year offers: a platform for young artists at the start of promising careers, well-known repertoire in new chamber arrangements, a retrospective hour on the wonderful French Lied singer Gerard Souzay, Italienisches Liederbuch (Italian songbook) — self-assessed by composer Hugo Wolf as his best work — and more.
I wish the festival and its director much success, and the audience enjoyable, touching evenings.
